Some of the officers had not taken sick leave for more than ten years.

Addressing the gathering, acting Commissioner of Police (CoP) Commissioner Stephen Williams said it pained him when when people ill-spoke the officer efforts in doing their job to prevent crime and keep the peace, and it also pained when people did not realise how significant the role of the police was to the people of TT.

“We can make a significant difference in the lives of the people on a daily basis. If we depend on people to say ‘job well done’, we may not get that. However, those on the inside can recognise the work done by the officers who dedicate their lives in serving others,” he said.

Williams said police officers could achieve greatness, but to do so, they had to get all officers on board.

The acting CoP said while their award was “not big” in terms of monetary value, he assured that the “large piece” would come with salary increases and back pay. He added that this was one way of saying “thank you” to his officers.

However, director of human resources at the University of the West Indies, St Augustine, Stephen Sheppard, said all work and no play was not a good idea.

While he praised the officers for their dedication, and emulating their acting CoP who has not taken any sick leave in 30 years, Sheppard said it has been suggested that officers should take take time off every two years, or every year if possible.

“Sick leave is time out from work which officers could take to address their health and safety needs without losing pay. Sick leave is a provision and not an entitlement. It is not waiting until November to call human resource to ask how much sick leave you have inside, and taking all one time before the end of the year,” he said.

“You need to take time to relax, spend time with your family, husbands, wives, children, and your parents when they are still alive. Take care of your health by eating properly and engage in exercise as you age.

Your job is stressful.

Continuous exposure to this type of stress is not good for you,” Sheppard said.
